Welcome to the 2014 Austin Food Blogger Alliance Austin City Guide (#atxcityguide on Twitter and Google+). This year’s guide is in collaboration with Citygram Austin.
While there are plenty of spots that may be better known and certainly delicious, they may not be included here. That’s not to say we don’t think you should hit up Stubb’s, Moonshine, Chuy’s, Hula Hut or many, many others. It’s just we assume those are included in many, many lists already and you probably already have them on your radar. This list was made up by food bloggers based on their favorite recommendations, so check them out and seek out some local flavor while you’re in Austin. Bon Appétit!

Easy Tiger by Caramelized
Never before had I encountered an Austin dining spot with a menu and atmosphere for every kind of eater at any time (except between the hours of 2 and 7 a.m., during which I hope you’d be sleeping). It’s a bakery; it’s a coffee shop; it’s a beer garden; it’s a bar; it’s a happy hour hot spot… Easy Tiger is whatever you want it to be. When you walk into the brick bake shop on East Sixth, you’ll be greeted by rows of beautiful baguettes and the rich aroma of loaves — perfectly hand-shaped loaves — in ovens behind the glass window. Walk down the stairs, and you’ll find a pub-like bar with both indoor and patio seating for parties of all sizes. • Order: Handmade salted pretzels with beer cheese, Italian beef sandwich, the best salted chocolate chip cookie in Austin (upstairs in the bakery on your way out!) • twitter.com/EasyTigerATX • Beer Garden 11am – 2am; Bake Shop 7am – 2am • 512.614.4972

Whole Foods – Green’s, Beans & Grains venue by Blinded by the Bite
Let’s just be honest here: the Whole Foods Market flagship store located at Lamar/6th Street is a foodie haven. With so many choices, you’d better come prepared! With a recent remodel of the prepared foods section, Whole Foods Market rolled out their “Greens, Beans & Grains” venue, which is part of their Health Starts Here program. You can make your own bowl from fresh vegetables or order up one of their menu items. My personal favorite is the “Happy Hippy Bowl” – it never disappoints. The original Austin restaurant from chef Shawn Cirkiel continues to draw Austinites to its downtown location in the heart of 6th Street. A nice launching point for a night out, it boasts some of the best happy hour deals in town, and it’s just upscale enough to turn a night out into a celebration or a special event. Mr. Natural by Aneelee.
Tex-Mex is as much a way of life in Austin as tacos are. This goes for the vegetarian contingent in town as well. Mr. Natural offers your standard fare (enchiladas and such), but its best is at the cafeteria-style hot bar where daily specials offer more homestyle Tejano food that we are accustomed to chowing down on en casa. • Order: Best traditional taco salad in town. • M-Sat 8am – 8pm, Sun Closed • 512.477.5228
Porfirio’s tacos by Burger Mary
Tucked away behind the shadow of a convenience store, Porfirio’s is a strong contender for best breakfast tacos in Austin, and absolutely a contender for one of the cheapest feeds around. The menu is extensive but simple, and no doubt you’ll experiment to find your favorite flavor combo. Their fiery green salsa is something to get excited about. The carne guisada also has a solid reputation, plus they are one of the few places in town to offer fideo. • Order: the migas taco, with extra green salsa • M-Sat 6am – 1pm, Sun Closed • 512.476.5030
Veracruz Taco House
The first of two taco trailer locations on the eastside, Veracruz All Natural delivers something besides delicious tacos on fresh, homemade tortillas… they offer some healthier options as well! The vegetarian tacos are my favorite – the Reyna reigns, full of egg whites, spinach, carrots, avocado, pico de gallo, and cheese, and the migas taco is one of my favorite in town. Veggie quesadillas and tortas are also an option, in addition to classic steak, chicken fajita, barbacoa, and al pastor. They also offer a variety of fresh squeezed juices, aguas frescas, and smoothies, all set at very affordable prices. On Sunday, they serve their breakfast club menu in lieu of tacos, which features empanadas and plantains with cream, followed by traditional dishes like chilaquiles rojo or verdes, enchiladas de mole, and picadas de bistec or huevos. Be sure to try all three salsa options: creamy green sauce, the spicy orange, and the pico de gallo with generous chunks of avocado. • Order: The veggie-packed Reyna taco is a must (egg whites, spinach, carrots, avocado, pico de gallo, cheese), and the migas taco is also delicious. For lunch, try an al pastor or barbacoa torta. Make sure to try one of their fresh agua frescas or fresh-squeezed juice blends, and fill cups of all three of their delicious homemade salsas. Shhmaltz by What Jew Wanna Eat
Austin is known to have a booming food scene, but it’s more migas and BBQ than bagels and knishes. “Schmaltz,” which literally means chicken fat, may not be the first name you would think of for this vegetarian Jewish-style food truck, but their tasty sandwiches and sides you won’t soon forget. Owner Julia Hungerford grew up Jewish and meat-free in Knoxville, TN, but her love of vegetarian cuisine grew when she visited Israel at age 11. She evolves the menu as her tastes change interests. She makes her own kombucha in-house, and most of the recipes can be made vegan or gluten-free. Sunflower Vietnamese by Blinded by the Bite
Sunflower Vietnamese Restaurant, located just a few doors down from the ever popular Ramen Tatsu-ya, is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in all of Austin. Run by a family originally from San Francisco, CA, they’re serving up authentic, delicious and inexpensive Vietnamese dishes and making me miss my home of San Francisco all in one bite! With many gluten-free dishes on the menu, Sunflower Vietnamese Restaurant hits it out of the proverbial ballpark and won’t disappoint, be it lunch or dinner you opt in for. SWAD by AneeLee
It took me over 5 years to find this all-vegetarian gem in North Austin. It’s tucked away in a strip mall on far North Lamar and its distance from our cemented South-bound life is the only thing that keeps us from regular weekly visits. Its interior and fixings are as unassuming as the strip mall it calls home, but there is nothing modest about the South Indian flavors that explode with every bite taken. The Goodnight by Midnite Chef
The Village in North Austin (on Anderson Lane near Mo-Pac/Loop 1) has been slowly gaining interest and new businesses are moving in, steadily filling in the few remaining gaps. The Goodnight is one of the newer kids on the block and is perfect for a date night with your sweetie, or for meeting up with friends. A long, plentiful bar centers the dining area. Four billiard tables are flanked by two ping-pong tables in the rear and there are bowling lanes for adventurous types. The staff are friendly and the food is diligently prepared, although it’s pub grub — albeit tasty pub food. The menu includes many fried items, salads, burgers and hot sandwiches, plus a few entrees of the beef/chicken/fish sort. For a light snack I recommend the Chef’s Board, featuring Antonelli’s Cheese Shop and local nibbles. Vegetarians have a few options but are all heavy on carbs. The cheesesteak has moist meat on a soft roll. • Order: the Farmer’s Market Pizza • twitter.com/TheGoodnightATX • Sun-Th 11am – Midnight, F-Sat 11am – 2am 512.459.5000

Curly’s Carolina, Texas by Mike Galante
Curly’s Carolina, Texas, is a coming-together of two former Austin-area BBQ food trailers. Hall of Flame BBQ brings its old school Texas style while Curly’s Perfect Pig shows off its Carolina roots. The Salt Lick by Full and Content
A short, winding drive from Austin through Hill Country oaks, leads to one of our state’s most famous barbecue joints, the Salt Lick in Driftwood. Offering a style distinctly different than what can be found in and around Austin at some of the other notable barbecue restaurants, the Salt Lick’s sauced and basted smoked meats prove that Texas is much too big to be defined by only one type of barbecue. It’s a topic that brews passionate loyalties, opinions, and discussions, but the hordes of people that visit the Salt Lick every day should be a testament to it’s popularity and significance within Texas barbecue culture. Waits can be long, but take a cooler and relax in the shade of the beautiful twisted oaks, then dig in. Try as much as you can of everything, and don’t shy away from their signature and delicious sauces. • Try a sampling of as many of the a-little-bit-sweet and a little-bit-smokey meats as possible. Dig into their signature vinegar slaw, ranch-style beans, and smashed potato salad. • Daily 11am–10pm
